Beware of Squirrels

Beware of SquirrelsWant a treehouse? A New York architect is taking orders for buildings constructed out of—and by—living trees. Mitchell Joachim developed the Fab Tree Hab with some colleagues while at MIT, but now he’s gone past the conceptual stage with his nonprofit, Terreform.

The idea is to allow plants to grow over a computer-designed plywood structure. Once the plants are interconnected and stable, the plywood is removed and reused. Joachim is experimenting with Israeli plants that grow quickly and develop an interwoven root structure that’s soft enough to “train” over the plywood, but then hardens into a more durable structure. The inside walls would be conventional clay and plaster.

It may take a while before houses are actually built. And the growing nature of the homes present challenges. One is with zoning: no municipality wants to grant a construction permit to a home that keeps changing. Windows are another problem. Joachim is experimenting with soy-based windows that could stretch with a home’s exterior. Dying trees would be less of an issue, since rotted portions could always be replaced with live trees.

Building Emergency Houses

Building Emergency HousesThe work we did for two days was long and hard, but we had a lot of help. Not only did Richard do a lot of the work himself, but his neighbor Reuben helped as well, even though he himself was getting nothing out of it. That seems to be the way things work in 24 de enero. Everyone was willing to help each other because they’re all in the same situation together.

The first thing we had to do was plot and dig holes next to the current house. Richard wanted to connect his new house, rather than putting in a separate one, so that he could continue to keep his family connected, but have more space.

To clarify, the term house here is used loosely, because in reality it’s nothing more than just a one-room shanty. In his old house, Richard had five people living in one room with a refrigerator and tons of refuse taking up space.

U. Minnesota students building house powered entirely by sun

 U. Minnesota students building house powered entirely by sunAfter 15 months of planning, University of Minnesota students are finally getting to fire up their drills and saws to begin construction on a fully functioning house powered exclusively by the sun.

The students are members of the University’s solar decathlon team, which will be taking its completed house to the National Mall in Washington, D.C., in October to compete against 19 other schools in a biennial national competition.

The Solar Decathlon competition, which is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, will last three weeks and will judge teams based on all aspects of their house, from energy efficiency to interior design.

The University’s solar decathlon team started preparing its proposal for the competition in the fall of 2007, Ann Johnson, project manager and director of the construction management program, said. In January, the team was chosen as one of 20 participants and has been working on designing and planning their house since.

Immigrants Build Houses in Mexico with Remittances- The Case of Construmex

Immigrants Build Houses in Mexico with Remittances- The Case of ConstrumexMany immigrants come to work in the US, and when they do, they usually leave family behind. Often, their primary objective is to make money and provide for their families back home. Some companies - like the Mexico-based multinational cement giant CEMEX - are taking advantage of this situation and are starting to productize remittances. Instead of sending cash to their families back home, immigrants using a program called Construmex send aid in the form of housing materials.

Productizing remittances is a secure way for workers abroad to provide what they think its priority to their families. Some may recall a post by Thamel dot Com founder Bal Joshi about this very subject. We recently covered a news story on NextBillion talking about CEMEX’s Construmex program:

Bird House Building Web Site Just Launched!

Bird House Building Web Site Just Launched!United States of America (Press Release) February 3, 2009 –
Homes for the Birds (http://homes-for-the-birds.com) is a new web site dedicated to building bird houses from scratch, and to selecting quality kits or pre-built houses. The site covers topics such as bird house selection, dimensions, materials, construction and placement. There are great tips for making a bird house more attractive to birds and increasing the likelihood of getting tenants.

Homes for the Birds includes a number of articles about building houses for various birds, including blue birds, purple martins, wrens, chickadees, flickers, woodpeckers, owl, ducks and more. These articles include bird house diagrams and dimensions, making it easy to build houses for many different birds. Placement of the house is discussed, as well as other tips that can be used to increase the likelihood of gaining tenants. “Most people will carefully build a bird house using all the proper materials and dimensions, only to find that no birds ever make their home in it. Where you put the house, and sometimes what you add to the house, is key,” said the site’s owner, Jason Kerchner.

Making cake without recipe like building house without blueprint, says baking prof

Making cake without recipe like building house without blueprint, says baking profWhether it’s a birthday, graduation, retirement, baby shower, fancy dinner, wedding or simply a morning coffee klatch, a cake proclaims it a special occasion. If the cake is homemade, so much the better.

But unlike many other types of cooking, baking is not a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants undertaking. In fact, trying to make a cake without a recipe is “like building a house without a blueprint,” says Roland Hofner, a baking professor in the culinary arts program at Fanshawe College in London, Ont., and owner of Cakewalkers, a city bakery specializing in pastries and cakes, especially wedding cakes.

Baking is a very “scientific” process, he explains, in which all the ingredients are building blocks that interact, causing chemical reactions to create the structure of the cake.

But that doesn’t mean you have to be a scientist to succeed. Those who develop the recipes have that knowledge, so all a home baker has to do is follow the instructions.

That’s why the key to baking is following the recipe to the letter, including measuring properly and adding the ingredients and following the method in the exact order given, Hofner says. “You can drastically change a recipe by switching around the method.”

Building Houses

Building HousesShop Drawings
The contractor usually receives his job from the architect or developer who needs “shop drawings” for their approval before any furniture construction begins. The architect does not and will not do shop drawings, but he does expect the contractor to provide him with detailed drawings of his sketches for his approval.
Shop drawings are a great insurance policy. Everybody gets to be on the same page and paper is still less expensive than wood. I can’t recall how many times I almost had a job completely drawn only to find out that the design had serious problems. When something like that happens with wood, it becomes a huge problem and much more expensive.
The contractor is obligated by the contract documents to submit shop drawings, product data, and samples for certain parts of the work. The architect is obligated by the owner-architect agreement to “review and approve or take other appropriate action upon Contractor’s submittals such as Shop Drawings, Product Data and Samples (B-141, Subparagraph 2.6.4). This is included among the architect’s Contract Administration Services.
